OSCE - the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe has missions in most of the former Soviet communist countries outside the European Union. The missions' websites provide information relevant to levels of democratisation in the various states. They can be accessed via the regions listing at the top of the OSCE home page.

Transitions On-Line - news service dealing with post-communist countries of Europe, University of Melbourne has subscription

Bank of Finland Institute for Economies in Transition - The BOFIT site is rich in material, primarily of an economic nature. It includes weekly reports on Russia, periodical reviews of Russia and China as well as many Discussion papers.

World News Network - provides a news service with specific pages for most countries in the area as well as information by topic and links to local media

Academic Journals

Europe Asia Studies - prestigious British journal published 8 times a year. Beware that home page by their commercial publisher, Taylor and Francis, is poorly designed and often dysfunctional. The University of Melbourne has a subscription and scholars based at the university are advised to enter via the university library catalogue. This enables access to full text pdf on a slightly better but still slow and poorly designed version of the publishers site

Slavic Review - pre-eminent US journal in the area. University of Melbourne holds hard copies and university scholars have access to electronic versions between 2002 and 2004.

The Agency's Statute guarantees its independent editorial policy and protects it from any economic and political influence"
