Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence: Postgraduate Projects

Postgraduate Events

As a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence CERC has been pleased to be able to run major national Postgraduate Workshops and Conferences.

2007 Events

CERC's 2007 postgraduate conference is being held on Wednesday 5 December and is entitled The Worlds of Europe and Europe in the World. The conference is open to Australian and New Zealand postgraduates. Limited assistance with travel costs is available for students outside the state of Victoria. The call for papers is currently open and closes September 17

The conference is just prior to a public lecture (held at University of Melbourne) and following major international conference (held at La Trobe): Europe and Asia between Islam and the United States: The Lessons of Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon and Iran. This conference is jointly sponsored by CERC (The University of Melbourne) the Centre for Dialogue (Latrobe), and in co-operation with 4 overseas institutions.

2006 Events

On December 8, 2006 a second Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence Postgraduate Conference, Europe: New Voices, New Perspectives, took place. The Conference home page and programme can still be accessed. Some papers from the conference can be found in the Europe: New Voices, New Perspectives e-book (see below)

2005 Events

In 2005 the Conference was titled Politics of Belonging: Citizenship, Migration and Ethnic Conflict in Europe.

The conference provided a focused forum for Australian postgraduate students and young researchers working on the fields of citizenship, migration and ethnic conflict studies under the rubric of European Studies (including law, economics, cultural studies, history and political science) to present and discuss their ongoing research with peers, academics and professionals in the given areas of interest. Aside from Victorian based postgraduates, presenter came from Adelaide, Sydney, Macquarie, and the University of Heidelberg. Grants to offset travel costs were awarded to presenters from interstate and participants in the conference also had their registration at CERC's international conference, "A Bitter Triumph? The Crisis of the European Project in the Aftermath of Enlargement" held the same week, sponsored via the Centre of Excellence project.

Some papers from the conference can be found in the Europe: New Voices, New Perspectives e-book (see below)

2004 Events

In 2004 the Centre of Excellence grant supported a NationaI Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Workshop entitled Europe in Flux: The Changing Face of Contemporary Europe. Apart from papers by Victorian students participants also heard papers from Curtain, Macquarie and Auckland universities.

Publications

Using Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence funds CERC has established a free dedicated email bulletin, the Eurograd, to serve Australian postgraduate students and keep them abreast of scholarly activity and opportunities in the area of European Studies.

Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence Funds also allowed for the production of edited volume of papers from CERC's postgraduate conferences in 2005 and 2006. This freely available ebook Europe: New Voices, New Perspectives was published by CERC in April 2007.

Directory of European Postgraduate Study in Australia. CERC is compiling a list of current postgraduates in European studies and is offering them the opportunity to be listed on the Web.
